Hunger Protest: US, UK, Canada Warn Nationals in Nigeria Over Security Concerns

Published:

The United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom have sent warnings to their citizens in Nigeria concerning the upcoming hunger protest.

These countries expressed concerns about potential violence during the planned protest. Furthermore, they warned their nationals to avoid areas where the confrontations could get heated.

To support this warning, they cited the history of things that happened during protests in Nigeria.

Hunger Protest Sage: Pressure on President Tinubu’s Administration

The administration of President Bola Tinubu will face severe pressure this week as the planned protest gets closer.

This protest arose due to hardship and hunger that have eaten up the country from the administration’s policies.

Therefore, Nigerians are expressing their tiredness of bad governance and have planned to protest starting on August 1, 2024.

Considering the level of discontent among Nigerians, there might be severe confrontations between the people and the government. However, this can only be stopped if there is a last-minute change in the perceived bad governance.

The government’s anxiety is evident through the rate of emergency meetings involving the presidency and other leaders.

Moreover, the protest organizers have been busy mobilizing civil society groups and youths for the #EndBadGovernance Movement.

Consequently, the US Mission in Abuja has urged Americans, through its advisory, to stay away from these rallies. The government cautioned its citizens to avoid crowds and demonstrations and pay attention to updates through the local media.

Likewise, the UK High Commission has warned its Nationals that the protests could last between July 29 and August 10. Hence, the citizens should be proactive and stay away from major cities like Lagos and Abuja.

As seen in previous occurrences, the protests usually involve roadblocks, checkpoints, physical confrontations, and traffic congestion.

Additionally, the government of Canada also sent warnings to its citizens, telling them about possible outcomes. It also asked the nationals to be vigilant, listen to local authorities, and grab regular updates.
