India Supreme Court Slams Union Government on Cryptocurrency Regulations Delay

Published:

The battle for clear government-approved cryptocurrency rules in India has been raging for a long time.

It has reached the extent that the government began working on a cryptocurrency bill under the guidance of the Supreme Court in 2018.

However, at this moment, the authorities have yet to be able to establish the last draft of the cryptocurrency bill despite its assurances repeatedly for the last four years to do so.

Quick Takes

  • The Indian Supreme Court yesterday slammed the Union government for being unable to provide the country with cryptocurrency regulations.
  • Amid increasing occurrences of cryptos-related criminal activities, the Supreme Court made this observation. The court made this observation during hearings of petitions filed concerning crypto fraud cases in various states within the country.
  • As a result, the court then directed the Union government to bring to record whether they intend to establish a dedicated federal agency that can investigate the ever-increasing cryptocurrency criminal cases or not.
  • Through the report, Justices Surya Kant and Dipankar Datta rebuke the Union government, saying, “It is quite unfortunate that even as at now, you still can’t provide any law. Is there any department at the national level that is knowledgeable about these cases and can investigate them appropriately?”
  • They said the court would like to identify a specialized national agency to accomplish the national interest.
  • The Supreme Court requests that the Union government file feedback regarding whether they can establish a structure to investigate crypto-related criminal cases.
