Leverkusen Reach Europa League Final After Epic 49-Game Run

Published:

On their way to reaching the Europa League final, Bayer Leverkusen has set an unbeaten record of 49 successive games.

With the goal from Josip Stanisic coming in the 97th minute, Bayer Leverkusen’s goals had been equalized.

They eventually beat Roma in the penalty shoot-out, ending with an aggregate victory of 4-2 and qualifying for the final.

Although Roma had lost in the first leg played in Italy, they brought a better game to Germany. They managed to end the game with a tie through two penalties scored by Leandro Paredes.

This makes the 49th successive game they have played without defeat in all competitions, and they have won 40 games.

With this record, they have outdone the previous record set by Benfica under Eusebio between December 1963 and February 1965.

Since European competitions began, the record held by Benfica had been the longest unbeaten till Leverkusen happened.

After claiming the Bundesliga title for themselves, they have also qualified for the German Cup final. Now they are ready to face the Italian side Atalanta in the Europa League in Dublin on the 22nd of May.

With Stanisic, Leverkusen has made History

During the game against Roma, Leverkusen dominated the first half. We saw Granit Xhaka shooting at the post from 22 yards away, but it was nicely saved by Mile Svilar the Roma keeper.

Events suddenly turned around when Jonathan Tah caused a penalty which Roma capitalized on and scored.

Roma gained another opportunity when Hlozek handballed while in Roma’s corner and Paredes secured another goal for them.

This time, Daniele De Rossi’s boys were ready to celebrate their win after the match until the nightmare. Within the remaining 8 minutes, Svilar missed the corner kick which flew right between his gloves and bounced into the net.

Stanisic cut in from the right and made a swift left-foot shot into the net and eluded Svilar, securing their passage to Dublin. He also sealed their place in the European football history books.

Leverkusen players wildly celebrated their victory on the pitch at full-time after a wonderful performance.

They have joined Dortmund to become the 2nd German team to make it to a European final within the same week.
