For years now, content creators in Nigeria have been unable to earn passively on their contents on meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram. While a few creators have sort of a means to earn on their contents despite being in an ineligible country, there are various attached to those means.
Recently, Sir Nick Clegg, the former Deputy Prime Minister of the UK and President of Global Affairs at Meta announced that Meta platforms will introduce a feature which would enable Nigerian creators to earn. These meta platforms include Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.
According to reports, this feature which would allow Nigerian creators to earn on the app would be introduced in June 2024.
Role of the Nigerian Government in the New Development
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had initially issued an order which made it possible for a Meta-backed deep-sea cable with a high potential for multi-billion dollar economic activities in Africa here in Nigeria.
The former UK deputy went on to thank him for that, in his words;
“It is an extraordinary infrastructure project. When it comes on stream in the first quarter of 2025, it will be twice as much as the capacity of all subsea cables that exist.

We buried the cable 50 per cent deeper than any other subsea cables under the seabed. It is more powerful and more extensive in terms of its geographical connectivity.
It could yield up to 37 billion dollars worth of increase in economic activity in the next two or three years across the African continent. “We have a lot to do with Nigeria to deepen partnerships,”
While addressing the new development, President Tinubu said that his administration’s goal is to make Nigeria the leading figure of information and communications technology in all of Africa.
The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale said in a statement he had signed that the President is keen on making sure Nigeria is not left behind in this modern-day world with lots of technological advancements.
Hence, his administration is creating new avenues for growth in information and communications technology, enhancing capabilities, and nurturing collaborations.
